Program Director Welcome

Catherine Cooper, DOA message from Catherine Cooper, DO
Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the Manatee Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Program.

We believe healthcare is local and we are committed to meeting the needs of the residents of Manatee County. Our faculty and administration are integrally involved in ensuring that all ages have access to comprehensive healthcare. Our goal is to ready the next generation of physicians to appropriately manage the healthcare needs of adults, children and families. We offer both inpatient and ambulatory experiences in an effort toward continuity of patient care. Our geriatric longitudinal experience, pediatric and adult medicine clinics enhance this approach.

We endeavor to maintain graduates locally to meet the growing medical needs in our area. Many of our faculty are prior graduates of our program and are active in both resident and faculty development of the program.

As a founding physician, I am excited to be back in leadership here at MMH GME and am looking forward to the growth of our program.

Mission, AIMS, and Educational Goals

Mission

The physicians at Manatee Memorial Hospital are dedicated to enhancing the education of our Family Medicine residents in the areas of acute care, chronic disease management, preventive care and procedures. Together, we are committed to providing high quality, comprehensive medical treatment while fostering an environment of patient-centered care, health promotion and prevention of disease.

AIMS

  • To educate physicians to provide compassionate, quality community healthcare for patients in all facets of life.
  • To encourage an atmosphere of camaraderie through mentorship and continued lifelong learning.
  • To promote self-wellness in both professional and personal environments.

Educational Goals

The goal of the program is to provide an educational experience that prepares the resident to be a competent family physician capable of providing comprehensive and coordinated care to a broad range of patients and families. The resident’s educational experience emphasizes the competencies and skills needed to practice family medicine of high quality in the community.

Residents will become sufficiently familiar with the specialized fields of medicine to enable them to participate as team members in the care of patients with chronic and complex disorders. They will learn how to apply evidence-based, cost-conscious strategies to diagnoses and disease management in patients, when hospitalized as well as in the FMP setting.

Residents will work with other members of the healthcare team in inpatient, ambulatory, home and long-term care settings, learning to become competent as leaders in the organization and management of patient- and family-centered medical care.

Over the three years of training, residents will achieve competency in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice, osteopathic philosophy and osteopathic manipulative medicine.

At Manatee Memorial Hospital, we are committed to providing the best in quality medical care and patient safety in an atmosphere that is compassionate and professional.
