Manatee Memorial Hospital Becomes First in Southwest Florida to Offer Innovative Renal Denervation Procedure to Treat High Blood Pressure

S. Jay Mathews, MD, MS, FACC, FSCAI, and Gino Sedillo, MD, FACC, were the first doctors in Southwest Florida to perform the procedures in the Cath Lab at MMH.
Manatee Memorial Hospital (MMH) is proud to announce the successful treatment of its first patients using the new Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) procedure, now available for certain patients with high blood pressure (hypertension). This groundbreaking procedure, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2023, offers a minimally invasive option for patients whose hypertension remains uncontrolled despite lifestyle changes and antihypertensive medications.
The procedure, known as renal denervation, targets the overactive nerves in the kidneys that play a role in high blood pressure. By using a minimally invasive approach, this treatment delivers energy to these nerves, helping to reduce the signals that contribute to high blood pressure. Renal denervation offers a promising new solution for patients who have not been able to control their blood pressure with other treatments.
Cardiologist S. Jay Mathews, MD, MS, FACC, FSCAI, and Gino Sedillo, MD, FACC, were the first doctors in Southwest Florida to perform the procedures in the Cath Lab at MMH. "We are excited to be the first to offer this advanced procedure to our community, as it marks a major milestone in the fight against hypertension," said Dr. Mathews, Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at MMH.
Hypertension is the single largest contributor to death1 and affects approximately 50% of U.S. adults2 with around 80% of those aware of their condition still unable to control it effectively3. Providing patients with access to this innovative treatment gives them another option.
Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if minimally invasive surgery is right for you.
